A bit about fondant and gum paste cutters.....

Hello Everyone,

It's been a while, but with writing being one of my New Year resolutions you'll see my posts more.....
I wanted to do a A little blurb on cutters....

Many people have asked me about the different cutters and which ones are better.
First some basics. Cookie cutters can be used with fondant and gum paste. So if you're ever looking for a specific gum paste or fondant cutter, check out the cookie cutter section of your store. There are many types of cutters- metal, plastic and plunger cutters.

Metal cutters:
The quality of metal cutter varies depending on what they are made out of. Metal cutters can be made from copper, stainless steel to tinware. I like a harder metal cutter that doesn't bend when using it, usually a stainless steel. However I do have some tinware ones just because I found the shape I wanted.
When you're looking to buy a good metal cutter, look for one that has a folded edge. This helps when cutting your shapes and you'll know which side is the cutting side.
If you're like me you'll end up with a great collection of metal cutters from Christmas themes to various cookies shapes.
Use caution when using a thinner metal cutters because it will scratch your table or board, you can also get those tiny cuts on their fingers!
I clean my metal cutters just in the sink with soap and water.
Also when you're buying metal cutters look at what else your cutter set can do. For example the large Orchid metal cutter set is fantastic because you can also use the longer cutter for Lilies or leaves.

Plastic cutters:
There are lots of plastic cutters out there. I love them and I use them a lot.
A tip when buying plastic cutters is to make sure the edges are smooth. Any uneven edges can catch your gum paste or fondant- this is frustrating when working with finer detailed pieces. All you have to do is run your finger along the edge to see if its smooth.
There are different types of plastic cutters so if you have instructions on the package see what advice they give you. For example there is a Daisy cutter that is very detailed and has a lot of petals, this particular cutter works best if you take your gum paste or fondant and lay it OVER the cutter (cutter side up of course) and using your rolling pin roll over your dough (keeping the cutter underneath) and then flip over and pop out. Keep this in mind: would your cutter work better if you roll your dough over the cutter rather than rolling your dough out flat and cutting out.

Plastic flower cutters
There is another plastic cutter called the plunger cutter. These are great because a lot of them have details on them and they're easy to use. You can get flower, leaf, snowflakes, birds, butterflies and more in plunger cutters.
Just roll out your dough, cut out your shape and press down for the details.

Have a favourite cutter? Looking for a particular cutter? Let me know

Orchid Cutter set
Orchid

This Orchid was made with the metal Orchid cutter. It's a great cutter because two oval shaped cutters can also be used for leaves or even Lilies.

Butterfly cutters

An great set of number and letter cutters.

The snowflake cutters were used to make the snowflakes on this cake. I used the large plunger cutter, then added another one with the medium cutter on top. I also used the cutter (without pressing down on the plunger) to make the design around the cake board.
